NARS Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil Review & Swatches

Nars Satin Lip Pencil - Palais Royal-2

A few days ago, I posted swatches of all of the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils — and I know several of you have been waiting for this review since!

Note: As of 3/6, these are now available for purchase on Nordstrom.com!

First, some details – per the NARS facebook page, the pencils will become available on narscosmetics.com on March 7th; I believe they will show up at other online retailers and in stores a little later, but I don’t know the exact dates. They will sell for $25, which is the current price of the similarly-packaged Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss pencils. At the moment, you can purchase them through Pinterest; details on that on the NARS Facebook page, here.

Nars Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil Swatch-2

Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil

This review is for the shade Palais Royal, which is a gorgeous deep berry. It’s incredibly pigmented – the thinner line on the left is just one pass of the pencil, and I didn’t press hard at all; just a light touch yields that kind of color payoff. The pencils are quite soft, but not so soft I had trouble sharpening mine (it wouldn’t have needed sharpening, but I wanted to test it out). Here’s the sharpened tip:

Nars Satin Lip Pencil - Sharpened

You can see that there was no issue. I used my Urban Decay Grindhouse sharpener because I pulled it out of the drawer first, but Essence’s dupe is just as good.

The texture of this product is different than other products I have tried. It applies very smoothly, and at first it feels like a very glossy lipstick or a gloss/lipstick hybrid – sort of like Revlon’s lip butters, or maybe a lip butter crossed with a non-sticky gloss. Note that the glossier the finish is.  Here is a freshly applied swatch with a moderate amount of product – I could have easily used more for a higher gloss finish.

After about 30-45 minutes, the product sort of dries down and melds into my lips, and starts to have more of a natural finish / satin finish.  It absolutely does not create a film like some long-wearing lipsticks do – this is more like the glossiness just wears off, and you’re left with all the color and less of the shine.

It’s hard for me to give a wear time in terms of hours, because lipsticks last so differently from person to person and it also depends on whether you’re eating or drinking (and I’m using sipping on something).  This Satin Lip Pencil was moderately long-wearing on me; the product itself lasted a few hours, and then it left a stain on my lips which hung around for another few hours (and faded evenly – no ring around the lips!). It wasn’t one of the longest wearing products I’ve tried, but it wore longer than the average lipstick. I personally did not find it either hydrating or drying, but I rarely find any lipstick drying, so I’ll be curious to see what others think!

Here’s a half-face shot, so you can see the color better with my skintone – it’s really a gorgeous shade.

Overall, I think this is a lovely product and a great new offering from NARS.  I absolutely love this color, and think they did an exceptionally good job with the shade range.  I’m not sure that it will become one of my go-to products, both because I tend to prefer something that transfers less (this does transfer to coffee cups, etc. significantly, especially when freshly applied) and because I usually prefer a very long-wearing lip product.  But, those are just personal preferences – this is a high quality product, and worth checking out once it launches!

New NARS Satin Lip Pencil Swatches

NARS Satin Lip Pencil - Palais Royal

NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Palais Royal

I’ve been hanging out at The Makeup Show Los Angeles, which is a pro-only beauty show, and I have so many pictures and lots of information to share with you all. I’m going to start with one of the most exciting things – swatches of all of NARS’s Satin Lip Pencils, which are new for Spring 2013 – I believe they launch in the U.S. on March 7th, and worldwide on April 1st, though they are available for purchase at The Makeup Show (& I did buy one, which I will review once I have the chance to test it out – review is here).

Note: As of 3/6, these are now available for purchase on Nordstrom.com!

They’re packaged just like NARS’s Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss pencils – a jumbo pencil that you sharpen – and they come in 13 shades; 12 will be sold at all the usual places, and one shade, Jardin Des Plantes, is exclusive to the freestanding NARS boutiques.

The following photos were taken with flash; you can see how glossy the pencils are! Note that the darker colors all left a persistent stain on my arm, and the lighter colors (the nudes) did not leave stains.  I’m guessing that these are going to be quite long-wearing, but I’ll get back to you on that.

Please note that the shade names Lodhi & Luxembourg were switched for the first hour or so this post was up; I apologize for the mistake! I am reasonably sure the rest are correct (I double checked my notes) – but if you think there’s something wrong, please let me know!

And finally, Jardin Des Plantes – this one (again), is the boutique exclusive. I believe that boutique exclusives are generally available on narscosmetics.com, but not at other retailers.

Vampy Lipgloss Swatches & Comparison

vampy lipgloss swatches-2

Lately, I’ve really been loving berry lips and vampy lips, and I’ve bought a few lipglosses to layer with my lipsticks to amp up the vamp factor! Today, I have swatches of Rimmel Black Diva, MAC Feelin’ So Good (reviewed here), and Becca Berry Twist.

vampy lipgloss swatches - rimmel black diva, mac feelin' so good, becca berry twist

Rimmel Black Diva // MAC Feelin’ So Good // Becca Berry Twist

As you can see, the Rimmel gloss is a true black.  The MAC gloss is a very deep plum brown, and the Becca is a true berry.  None of the three have any shimmer.

Rimmel Black Diva

Rimmel Black Diva is quite sheer when applied. I don’t see myself, or most, wearing it alone – it’s definitely a layering gloss.

MAC Feelin’ So Good

Feelin’ So Good is a color that is wearable alone, but it really gathers in lip lines. So, it’s also best for layering – but it is an incredibly layering shade, and I absolutely LOVE it.

Becca Berry Twist

Becca Berry Twist is definitely the best shade to wear on its own. My lips weren’t in very good condition when I swatched it – you can see a horizontal line on them, which means I need to exfoliate, but it’s not really the lipgloss’s fault.  Note that the Becca gloss does have a rather strong sweet scent – I don’t really like it, but it does fade quickly.

I’ve also swatched all the glosses over a berry lipstick, Wet n Wild Ferguson Crest Cabernet. Here’s the lipstick alone:

It’s a really lovely bright berry, and one that I’ve been wearing frequently! I have a review of it and all the other Wet n Wild Perfect Pout lipsticks here.

WnW + Rimmel Black Diva

Here is the same lipstick with the Rimmel lipgloss. It tones down the brightness, and somehow brings out the purple. I like this, but I don’t think I love it.

WnW + MAC Feelin’ So Good

Here is the lipstick with the MAC lipgloss (or lipglass). I love this, I love it SO much.  It’s deeper, a bit more plum, but not too dark, and just a gorgeous shade overall!

If you’d like to see this lipgloss over several other shades (reds & a vamp), please see this post.

Adding the Becca gloss also deepens the Wet n Wild lipstick, but doesn’t change the color as much as the other two.  It does tone down the brightness, and is a really lovely color – a great combination.  I’ll be wearing this combination in the future for sure!

As a final note, due to reader feedback, I’m experimenting with zoomed-out lip swatches that show more of my face.  Do you like them, hate them, are you indifferent to them? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

MAC Archie’s Girls Feelin’ So Good Lipglass Swatches & Photos

mac feelin so good lipglass

I get frustrated with the way MAC’s limited edition collections sell out before I have a chance to see swatches, so I often just skip them entirely – but one item from the new Archie’s Girls collection caught my eye.  I purchased the Feelin’ So Good Lipglass, a very deep, vampy purple-brown lip gloss, based off of just one swatch – and I’m so glad that I did!

I haven’t tested it out thoroughly (but if you’re familiar with MAC’s lipglass formula, this is the same), so this post will be mainly swatches & pictures. It’s actually still available online at Maccosmetics.com; and once it sells out there, it will still be obtainable for a while – it seems that this isn’t going to be a shade that sells out immediately, so you will be able to find it at MAC stores, counters, and other online retailers – I prefer to buy MAC at Nordstrom due to their free shipping / free returns policy.

mac feelin so good lipglass swatches-2

heavy swatch // light swatch – with flash

I don’t usually do heavy and light swatches for lip products, but it seemed useful since this gloss is very different when worn as a sheer layer vs. a when worn more heavily. Note that although there is a tiny bit of sparkle in the swatch, it doesn’t show up on my lips.

I have lip swatches several ways. You’ll notice that in the first three photos, it gathers in my lip lines – this was somewhat visible in person, but not nearly as visible as it in close up photography.

Thicker layer of Feelin’ So Good

After trying Feelin’ So Good alone, I also tried it over two very different red lipsticks (both swatched alone in this post). Rouge d’Armani 400 is a bright red with a slightly glossy finish; NARS Cruella is a darker red with a matte finish.

Feelin’ So Good over WnW Cherry Bomb

My favorite look that I tried is definitely over NARS Cruella – I love how it deepens the color. I tried this over Wet n Wild Cherry Bomb, and loved it so much I had to update this post with a photo! I also adore it over Wet n Wild Ferguson Crest Cabernet – you can see a photo of that combination here.  I’ll definitely be layering this gloss over lots of other lipsticks as well; I think it will work well with most cool shades. Any suggestions for what I should try it over?

Did you buy anything from the Archie’s Girls collections? What are your thoughts on limited-edition MAC generally?

Revlon Killer Watt Colorburst Lipgloss Review & Swatches

revlon killer watt

Revlon recently released the new, limited-edition Naked Tips & Neon Lips collection which consists of eight shades of Colorstay nail polish and three shades of Colorburst lipgloss. Today I have a review and swatches of one of the shades of lipgloss – Killer Watt – for you.

Revlon’s Colorburst Lipgloss is one of my favorite lipgloss formulas – it’s not sticky or slippery. It is moisturizing, reasonably long wearing (for a gloss), and very comfortable to wear. I now own six colors, and I’ll have swatches of all them for you in a post that’s coming up shortly.

Colorburst Lipgloss Applicator

Killer Watt is looks very bright in the tube (and is part of a collection called Neon Lips!) but is surprisingly subtle when swatched and when applied.  I’d describe it as a sheer coral.

Overall, this lipgloss isn’t exactly what I expected (though I did get a heads-up from a commenter that it was not neon – thank you!), but it’s a lovely gloss, and I’m glad to have it! I do recommend the Revlon Colorburst glosses generally as a good quality drugstore lip gloss.
