Burberry Pale Barley Sheer Eyeshadow Review, Swatches, Photos

Burberry Pale Barley

Today, I have the second of my three Burberry eyeshadow reviews – this review is for the extremely popular shade Pale Barley, which is a fantastic lid color.

As I wrote in my review of Trench, Burberry eyeshadows are packaged in a square metal compact, which is embossed in the signature Burberry pattern. Although the compact is really lovely, I actually find it kind of impractical. It doesn’t open flat – it only opens to about 90 degrees.  Additionally, it’s magnetized (which is fine), but the polarity is such that the eyeshadow compacts don’t stack neatly – sometimes they stack, and sometimes they repel.   The compact contains a sponge-tipped applicator, which I find odd; who applies a luxury-brand eyeshadow with the enclosed applicator instead of a brush?

Like Trench, Pale Barley is fantastic – I think it really lives up to the hype surrounding it.  I think I would consider it a hybrid of a satin and a shimmer finish – as you can see from the swatches below, the shimmer is so subtle that it really just adds dimension rather than being an obvious shimmer.  It’s really lovely, and even more beautiful in person.

The following swatches are on bare skin.

Update January 2013: I’ve heard that this shade has been discontinued; I don’t know for sure, but it was shade No. 22 and it’s not listed on either Nordstrom or the Burberry website – both skip from No. 21 to No. 23. So, it does appear to be discontinued.  I would suggest MAC Patina as a substitute / dupe for Pale Barley – the texture isn’t the same, but the color is quite similar. The Delicate Hummingbird blog has a comparison swatch here.
And, it turns out that it was just out of stock – should be back in stock shortly!
