I’ve heard many, many great things about Burberry’s lipstick formulas, but at $30 each, I wanted to try before I bought one. So, I went to eBay and bought a sampler set of four Lip Mist lipsticks, which I am going to review today, as well as a sampler set of four Lip Cover lipsticks, which I will review separately. Burberry also has a third lipstick formula – the Lip Velvets – but there is no sample set has been made for those. Note that these sampler sets were not intended for purchase; they are intended to be given away at counters.
The Lip Mists are described as a “sheer lipstick,” and are supposed to offer a “hint of natural, sheer color that leaves lips with a moist, dewy finish.” They (and all the lipsticks) come in Burberry’s checked metal magnetic packaging; I actually find it a little too bulky for my tastes, though I do like the weight of the metal.
Given that the lipstick is described as having a hint of color, I thought it might barely show up. That’s definitely not the case – these lipsticks are sheer in that they are translucent, but they have more than a hint of color. Blueberry and Rosy Red are the most juicy and translucent looking, and have no shimmer; Feather Pink is more opaque and has some shimmer, and Copper has shimmer and is somewhere in between Feather Pink and the others in terms of translucency / opacity.
I’m not sure if it’s because I was applying with a lip brush rather than from the bullet, but I found that layered swatches had a tendency to get slightly patchy:
And lip swatches – I think these show even more clearly how Blueberry and Rosy Red have a jelly-like finish, Feather Pink does not, and Copper is somewhere in between.
I like all four of these, but Blueberry is my favorite, followed by Rosy Red. I don’t think I own anything with a similar color and finish to Blueberry, so it’s now on my wishlist!
Lasting power is what I’d expect from something with this finish; about 2-3 hours with occasional coffee sipping. I actually think that’s pretty good for sheer lipsticks with this type of glossy finish.
Overall, I really like these; I’m glad I bought the sampler set, and I have a feeling that I’ll eventually purchase Blueberry; maybe when there’s a good GWP. Pricey, but recommended!
