How I Do My Eyebrows: Picture Tutorial

Eyebrow tools

Here’s how I fill in my eyebrows. I always use my absolute favorite eyebrow product: Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in Brunette, which I have reviewed in full and swatched here.  I love the Anastasia Brow Powder Duo because it lasts all day, comes in a variety of natural shades, and has two colors (you’ll see below how I use both).  Although it’s pricey – $22 – I’ve been using it almost every day for over six months, and I’ve just started to see a dip.

If you don’t want to shell out $22 for the Anastasia, I also like Wet n Wild’s Brow kit (swatched here) – the texture is nice, and the darker shade especially is a great, natural looking color – if, of course, you have dark eyebrows.

Here is my eyebrow without any product – I tweeze, and trim the center/top.

First, I take the lighter shade of the Brow Powder duo on to my eyebrow brush (I’m using Sephora’s brow brush; I trimmed a bit off the side to make the head smaller), and then, starting in the center of the brow, I apply it to the inner half of my eyebrow, using short, light strokes.  I like to start in the center because then I don’t end up with a harsh inner edge.

Next, I pick up the darker color on the brush, and again starting in the center, and again using short, light strokes, I apply to the outer half of my brow.

End result is as follows:

Because I was concentrating on doing this to take pictures, I applied perhaps a touch more heavily than normally.  If you apply more heavily than you intend to, or if you end up with a harsher inner edge than you like, you can use your normal eyebrow brush to continue to go over the eyebrow to blend it out, or you can use a clean spoolie to blend it out.

I don’t use a brow gel or wax; I find that it’s not necessary, as my eyebrows aren’t particularly unruly.  Just brushing on the eyebrow powder is enough to smooth them out, and they tend to stay in place all day.

And remember: eyebrows are sisters, not twins! When shaping your eyebrows, it’s usually impossible to make them look identical.  I am much happier with my eyebrows now that I’ve accepted their asymmetry; I try to keep them the same thickness, but I don’t worry about the fact that one is slightly more arched than the other!

Anastasia Brunette Brow Powder Duo Review, Swatches, Photos

Although I’ve written before about my love for the Anastasia Brow Duo in Brunette, I’ve never done a proper review for it – so I have one for you today!

The Anastasia Brow Duo powders are packaged in a very small compact, with the Anastasia logo embossed on the front. I really like the packaging – it’s very simple, very pretty, and very practical.   Inside, the compact has a darker and a lighter shade.  The Anastasia Brow Duo comes in six shades, ranging from a cool blonde to a dark ebony (and including a shade suitable for redheads).

The quality of the powder is exceptional. It is soft, smooth, and has the perfect level of pigmentation for a brow powder – it’s easy to pick up color on my brush, and my eyebrows look just right, never too heavy or too light.  It lasts all day on my normal to dry skin.

The shade Brunette is described as a “dark warm brown” – but one of the things I like about it is that there aren’t any red tones at all. It’s a cool, ashy dark brown that looks very natural on my eyebrows, which are naturally almost black. I could probably wear the darkest shade of Anastasia Brow Powder (Ebony), but Brunette is more foolproof for me since it’s a little lighter – really, it’s up to individual preference!

Anastasia Brow Powder Duos are available at both Sephora and Ulta for $22. Although the price is a bit high, I’ve been using mine several times a week for about six months, and I haven’t even made a noticeable dip yet (as you can see from the first picture).  So, the price is worth it to me for such a great product!

Eyebrow Update

After looking at the photos for my bronze EOTD post, I realized that my eyebrows were in desperate condition and I needed to take care of them fast! I usually shape them myself, because I’m afraid that if I get them done, I’ll end up with something too thin – I like the thickness of my brows. But, they were so overgrown that I didn’t want to spend the time tweezing them

So, I went to the Benefit Brow Bar near me, and talked to the women there. The esthetician said she would be happy to talk to me first and explain what she was going to do, so I sat down to talk to her. She also had full eyebrows herself, which I took as a good sign. She explained that she was only going to clean up the stray hairs, and shape them a little – she had no intention of making my eyebrows any thinner. So, I decided to risk it – and I’m thrilled with how my eyebrows turned out!

Project Swatch #12: Brow Powder Duos Review, Swaches & Comparison

Interrupting the eyeshadow swatchfest, I bring you some eyebrow powder swatches! (I’ll have more eyeshadow swatches for you tomorrow)

Wet n Wild

I own two very similar eyebrow powder duos at two very different price points: the Anastasia Brow Powder duo in Brunette, and the Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow Kit in Ash Brown, which seems to be the only color available.

Anastasia

I’ve swatched this one a little differently; I wanted to be able to see the two lighter shades compared, and the two darker shades compared.

As you can see, the two duos are very similar, but have subtle differences. The lighter Anastasia shade looks like a taupe to me, while the Wet n Wild is more of a brown. The darker Anastasia is definitely in deep brown territory, while the Wet n Wild veers into brown/black.  My guess is that the Anastasia duo one shade darker – Ebony – would also be very close to the Wet n Wild.

As for texture – they’re both quite good. Both are soft and silky, though the Wet n Wild kicks up a bit more dust when I use it.  The Wet n Wild packaging is practical but unpretty, and the Anastasia packaging is elegant (but is that worth an extra $19? I don’t know).
