Rimmel Scandal Eyes Eyeliner Review, Swatches, Photos

rimmel scandaleyes waterproof kohl eyeliners

Taupe, Nude, Deep Blue

Rimmel released its Scandal Eyes liners in the UK a little while ago, but they are new to the US. They showed up first in temporary displays, which had a only a few shades, but now that Rimmel wall displays are being updated, more shades are available. I’ve seen them in-store at all the major drugstores in my area, and they’re already online at Ulta.com – and only $4.49. Per the Rimmel website, seven shades are available in the UK and ten shades are available in the US. Two of the shades I purchased, Nude and Taupe, are available in both countries, and Deep Blue is US-exclusive.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the US shades:

Let me cut to the chase: I LOVE THESE. This review is going to be a complete rave, I love them SO much. They might even replace Prestige Total Intensity pencils as my all-time favorite eyeliners. I will definitely be buying the black and a couple more shades (and will also be trying out the Scandal Eyes Shadow Sticks to see if they’re just as good!

So, what makes them so great? They are creamy but not too soft (the Prestige pencils do have a tendency towards being too soft).  They are smudgeable at first, but after they set they don’t migrate, smudge, or move.  I tried to smear the swatches on my arm, but was completely unable to – I eventually got them to flake a little, but only after my arm was quite red from rubbing at it! Nude lasts about 5-6 hours on my waterline – I wear contacts, and I’ve never had anything last six hours on my waterline before! And, I get all day wear on my upper or lower lashline.

In the below swatches, the line on the left is a single pass, and the square on the right is a built up swatch. There isn’t much difference, because these liners are very pigmented in one swipe – you don’t need to go back and forth to build them up!

Nude // Taupe // Deep Blue

Nude is a peach beige – it’s great to see more shades like this at the drugstore.  Taupe is a light brown – it’s fantastic shade for my lower lashline, as it defines, but isn’t harsh like a darker brown would be. I normally only use eyeshadow on my lower lashline because I find most pencil lines too harsh, but this is very wearable.  I think it would also make a great upper lashline color for light blondes who want a natural but defined look. Deep Blue is a very dark navy blue – gorgeous, and a great alternative to black.

Edit: I love these so much that I went back and bought more! Here are quick swatches of the five shades I currently own:

I also have a comparison of my nude (or again, light peachy beige) pencils – the Scandal Eyes one is a bit darker and more orange in comparison to the others, which are the MAC Pro Chromagraphic Pencil in NC15/NW20 (now available online) and the concealer pencil from the Hard Candy Glamoflauge concealer.

There’s not much else to say – go buy these now! And tell me what you think!

I really don’t understand the concept of a defined look with a neutral eyeliner. What does it it do exactly. It would be nice to see a comparison, then I can get an idea of it.

If this is handy for blondes , what color should you recommend for someone with soft black hair and deep dark brown eyes .

I don’t have experience with rimmel , I had with L’Oreal infallible and was awful cause it was a very hard pencil for my eyes and it made my eyes watery.

Gosh was great and found recently Milani witch is super soft and stay a long period and I think do a great job too.

    • For me, the idea of using a taupe or soft brown eyeliner for a defined, neutral look is that your eyes stand out more & look better than without any eye makeup, but it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a ton of makeup. If I use a black eyeliner on my lower lashline I think it looks like I’m wearing a lot of makeup (because of my eye shape). But, if I don’t wear anything on my lowerlashline & a lot of eyeshadow, upper liner, it looks kind of not-balanced. I think a post with photos is a good idea!

I’m dark haired & Taupe is a great color for me for my lower lashline, but too light for my upper lashline. I need a darker color on my upper lashline – if I want a natural look, I usually still use black, but a very very thin line very close to my eyelashes.

Thank pictures would be useful to see the difference, In my case it is hard to decide which shade to use cause brown would look seriously unnatural . I always try to get balance and , and avoid being over makeup ed.
My eye shape doesn’t fit with eyeliner on the upper lash line. that’s why I only use on my lower-line, and I use black but you can barely see it, it cant never get dramatic, I think it is because my lashes are also very dark

  • i got nude and taupe at walmart and it was only 3.97! i was excited haha. I guess i’ll have to try the black one too! you’re tempting me! haha

If you do not mind a bit of shimmer (not glitter) try the Milani shadoweyez pencil in Champagne Toast for a nude WL color. It seriously does not budge all day. I recommended it to a friend who wears a nude WL every single day and it performed the same on her. I only wish they had a grey or black because I seldom every wear a light WL, and the brown shade is just a bit too light for my taste. It is very pretty, I just like something darker since with my hooded eyes I do not wear liner on my lashline and rely on my WL/TL liner alone.

Very glad to see more colors showing up. I saw these at Walgreens quite a while ago but they only had three very basic colors. Hopefully both they and the shadow sticks will come to my area soon. I bet they would make great shadow bases.

Thanks for posting about these! I’ve been eyeing the Nude shade on ULTA’s website, but would rather find it in person. My search begins (and for Taupe- I totally know what you mean about having a lighter color for the lower lash line!).

  • krystle balintec

YES! FINALLY! I have been waiting for that nude eyeliner to come here for so long! There were no drugstore nude pencils that didn’t have shimmer so I’m def going to my Ulta soon.

Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Wake Me Up foundation. Will they ever be launching that? Preferably soon? 😛

  • krystle balintec

I just checked the Ulta website and it doesn’t have Taupe listed as one of the colors. Hopefully they just forgot to add it and I’ll just see it at my Ulta store. (:

    • Oh, that’s weird. I bet it is at your Ulta – if not, I think I’ve seen it at CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid (or at least seen an empty space for it!).

  • MakeupWithdrawal

Oh fantastic! A NUDE DRUGSTORE PENCIL!!! PI Deepest Black is my all time HG, such a rave from you REALLY makes me want to try these!

  • Monica – Pisica albastra

Better than the Prestige you say?! Hmmm….must get my hands on them!
Do they need sharpening? Or they just twist up? Thank you!

  • Procrast1nato2

Can’t wait for these to show up in Canada! The Hard Candy one looks really good as well, I haven’t seen that one before. I’ll check it out when I’m next at a wal-mart! Right now I’m switching between Benefit Eye Bright on the waterline or MAC’s Pale Yellow pencil (that one might be a pro product)

  • Liz

This is great news! I’m about to post about the greatness of Prestige but they seem to be pulling out of the one line of drugstores that carry them around here. But now I have a replacement that’s just as cheap – yay!!

    • I still love Prestige! I just think I might love the Rimmel ones even more. But, the colors ranges are actually pretty different, which is fantastic – MOAR EYELINER FOR ME.

  • Lyn Cheapasf

Have you tried the darker one on your waterline? Because I find that it’s more obvious when dark shades smear, whereas if nude or white gets a little patchy, it’s fine. I’m curious, because I never have any luck with anything staying on my waterline, either.

    • I haven’t – I rarely wear dark colors on my waterline. After about five hours, the nude color was definitely starting to look patchy, I looked at it up close to check 🙂 But usually everything is 100% gone from my waterline inside of three hours, so this is still way better than usual!

I had to tell you that I just found these stocked in the Walgreens Rimmel display, finally! Thanks so much for telling me that they weren’t in a special display. I picked up Nude and Taupe and love them so far- the swatches on my arms didn’t budge AT ALL.
