Maybelline The Rocket Volum’ Express Mascara Review, Swatches, Photos

Maybelline the Rocket Volum' Express Waterproof

Maybelline the Rocket Volum’ Express Waterproof

I am generally a big fan of Maybelline mascaras, so I was excited to try Maybelline’s newest, called the Rocket (though the name unfortunately reminds me of ). I purchased the waterproof version in the shade Very Black (waterproof also comes in Brownish Black, and washable comes in those two shades plus Blackest Black).

Note: It’s listed -->online at Target.com --> now – it’s not yet available to buy online (as of 12/31), but you can use the in-store locator function to find it at a store near you.

Here’s a closer look at the brush, both without and with mascara:

The brush picks up the right amount of mascara – not too much, and not too little. There’s no need to wipe it off, and it doesn’t seem to get a glob of mascara on the end, which is great.  It is quite a big brush – I prefer a smaller brush, as I find it easier to use on my corner lashes, but that’s just personal preference.   As you can see, it’s a silicone-bristle wand, which I tend to prefer over traditional wands, though again that’s just my preference.

Here is my eye with no mascara, and with one thorough coat of the Rocket. I almost always curl my eyelashes and use a mascara guard, but I didn’t for the photo, so you could see how the mascara performed on its own.

My eyelashes are sort of wonky right now, maybe because I was using Rapidlash and stopped, so I have some longer lashes and some shorter lashes – that’s not the mascara’s fault! I think the mascara performs pretty well, but not perfectly. It’s hard to tell from this angle, but it flattens out my eyelashes some rather than enhancing curl.  It doesn’t clump much, but it does a little bit. It adds a little volume and a little length, but nothing spectacular.

On my other eye, I curled my lashes and used a mascara guard (in addition to protecting my lid from smudges, a mascara guard helps the brush comb through lashes, which helps separate them and get them all going in one direction instead of being all wonky and heading all over the place). This was the result.

I think this is a much nicer result – still some very minor clumps, but a much better curl (of course).

I’ve been testing the Rocket mascara over the past few days, and I haven’t experienced any smudging, smearing, or flaking – I’ve even taken a nap in it and woken up with perfect mascara.  Maybelline’s mascara formula and I get along really well!  It removes easily with cleansing oil or makeup remover.

Overall, this is a solid choice for if you’re looking for a new mascara, but nothing to run out and buy immediately.  If you prefer a large, silicone bristled brush, this might even become a favorite.  Personally, I like this mascara enough to continue to use it, but I won’t repurchase because I prefer a smaller brush.

Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara Review, Swatches, Photos

Covergirl Clump Crusher

Covergirl Clump Crusher

When I first heard about Covergirl’s new mascara, Clump Crusher (now available for -->purchase online -->), I was taken aback by the name.  I think it’s one of the worst product names I’ve ever heard, and it made me want to avoid buying the mascara.  But, as I started to hear good things about the mascara, I decided I wanted to try it.  I found it (on sale!) at CVS – they only had one version, non-waterproof black, so I’m not sure if it comes in a waterproof option.

As you can see, Clump Crusher mascara is packaged in almost-neon green tube.  Personally, I prefer understated black packaging, but I guess this will be easy to identify in my drawer!  The Clump Crusher wand is made of rubber (or is it silicone? I’m not sure.).  The wand is slightly curved, and has lots and lots of tiny bristles – it’s almost like a comb.

Clump Crusher mascara applied smoothly and evenly.  True to it’s name, it’s a relatively non-clumping mascara – I didn’t have any clumping after one layer, and only minimal clumping after two layers.  It did a good job lengthening, and and okay job volumizing.

Note I had curled my lashes in the morning; then later in the day I washed off my mascara in order to apply Clump Crusher. I didn’t re-curl, but I think I still have a little curl left in them.  Clump Crusher seemed to enhance the curl.

No mascara / one coat / two coats

No mascara / one coat / two coats

I think my favorite thing about Clump Crusher is how soft it leaves my eyelashes.  They’re only the slightest bit stiffer than if I wasn’t wearing mascara at all, and they definitely aren’t crunchy.

Clump Crusher wore well, as most mascaras do on me. It didn’t flake, smudge, or smear.  It was easy to remove – just water got off most of it, and I finished up with Bioderma makeup remover.  Because it was so easy to remove with water, this version probably isn’t a good choice for anyone with watery eyes – it is likely to smear on you.

Overall, this is a good mascara.  It looks good applied, and wears well.  However, I don’t see it as something special.  I’ve tried several other mascaras – drugstore included – that I like just as much, and that also don’t clump on me.  If you’re curious about this one, it’s worth a try – but it’s nothing to be especially excited about.

Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara Review, Photos, Swatches

Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara – GWP packaging

I recently bought a couple Armani items (Maestro foundation, Rouge d’Armani 400, and Rock Sand ETK Intense) and got a really nice GWP that included a mini-sized Eyes To Kill mascara.

The wand is bigger than I prefer, so I first I was a bit skeptical about the mascara. I find larger wands often don’t separate as well for me, and are harder to manipulate.

Armani ETK wand

However, this wand is an exception to that rule – it works really well for me.  I get great separation and definition, and no clumps at all.

The formula of the mascara itself is also fantastic.  I’ve worn it several times now, and it never smears, smudges, or flakes on me.  It’s not waterproof (though there is a waterproof version), so it’s fairly easy to remove.

Wearing Armani ETK Mascara

Overall, I love this mascara.  It performs really well.  The only thing I don’t like is the price: $30.  With so many great mascaras under $10, I just don’t see myself buying a full size version once my mini size runs out – but I’ll definitely enjoy using the mini until then.

Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara Review, Swatches, Photos

MUFE Smoky Lash mini mascara

Several months ago, I purchased a mascara sampler from Sephora that included a mini-sized Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Extra Black Mascara.  I try not to keep too many mascaras open at once, so it’s taken a while for me to open it up.

Although I currently have a few other mascaras open – Jordana, an Hourglass mini (I finished the first one, and loved it so much I bought another mini off Ebay), the purple Maybelline – which doesn’t really count, I think, and a Japanese mascara I have yet to review – my curiosity got the better of me. MUFE Smoky Lash seems to get good reviews, and I was curious to see if I would like it.

MUFE Smoky Lash – wand

Smoky Lash has a traditional-type wand, with very full bristles. Generally, I don’t like this type of wand – I prefer either a rubber wand (like -->Maybelline One-by-One’s --> wand), or a traditional type wand with smaller, more separated bristles (like the Jordana mascara’s wand). I find that this type of very full wand makes my lashes clump a little. And, true to form, I had some clumping with this mascara.

MUFE Smoky Lash applied

Overall, I feel sort of neutral about the quality of this mascara. It’s fine – it gives me good volume and length – but nothing spectacular. It clumps a bit – but not too badly.  The good news is that it wore very well, and did not flake or smudge at all, even when I rubbed my eyes.  I had no trouble removing it.

It retails for $23, and I would not pay that for it – there are plenty of less expensive mascaras that perform just as well.  It does come in a few other colors – including plum, blue, and green – and it might be a nice option for a good quality colored mascara; it’s certainly better quality than the purple Maybelline I just reviewed!

Mascara is such an individual makeup product though; like foundation, it seems to behave differently on everyone, and there’s really no substitute for trying different mascaras out for yourself.

Maybelline Pop of Purple Great Lash Colored Mascara Review, Swatches, Photos

Maybelline Pop of Purple Great Lash

Maybelline Pop of Purple Great Lash

Today, while browsing at Rite Aide, I came across a display of Maybelline Great Lash colored mascara – Pop of Purple, Blink of Blue, Go Go Green, and Totally Teal.  Although I’m not generally a fan of Great Lash mascara, I have been wanting an inexpensive purple mascara, so I decided to buy Pop of Purple.

Maybelline Colored Great Lash Display

The tube is pretty cute, and the purple is quite a nice shade – it’s a medium purple that has a nice balance of red and blue tones.  The following picture is with flash – otherwise, I couldn’t get the color on the wand to show up in the photo:

This swatch photo is in natural light:

In person, I could see the color on my almost-black eyelashes, but it is VERY subtle.  It’s much more apparent in the following picture that in person:

So, I tried it over a white primer (Diorshow Maximizer), with the following results – my eyelashes are much longer (I love that primer!), and the color is just a little bit more apparent.

Pop of Purple – with white primer

In terms of formula, it seems to be the standard Great Lash formula, which I do not like, though I haven’t tried it out for many years now. I haven’t had trouble with smudging or flaking, but I just don’t like the application; I get very little length or volume, and lots of clumping – which you can see in the no primer picture above.

Overall for around $6 (I’m not sure exactly what I paid, or where my receipt is), it’s worth it to me to have an inexpensive purple mascara. I wish the color was a little brighter and the formula was a little better, but it’s still a fun purchase.

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara Review, Photos

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara

There’s been some buzz lately about the super-affordable Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara, so I decided that I’d buy it to check it out.  I’ve heard that it’s usually only $2.99, but my Walgreen’s was selling it for $3.99; still a great price for what turned out to be an awesome mascara! If you don’t have a Walgreens nearby, you can buy it online at Cherryculture.

When I opened the tube (which was shrinkwrapped – yay for sealed drugstore packaging!), I was pleasantly surprised by the brush; it’s small and just the type of brush I tend to prefer if I’m going to use a more traditional-type mascara wand instead of a rubber one (I like both types).

Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara –  wand

To cut to the chase – I LOVE this mascara.  It is the most volumizing mascara I have ever tried, and it gives really great definition with no clumps at all.  It is not the most lengthening mascara ever (that would be Majolica Majorica Lash Expander Frame Plus, which I am planning to review eventually), but it still gives good length.

It is not waterproof (so it removes easily), but I don’t have any trouble with flaking or smudging.  Note that it is a fairly wet mascara, so it takes a couple seconds to dry; it’s possible to smear it before it fully dries.

Here are some comparison pictures of my eyelashes without & with mascara; apologies about the blurriness!  Because my eyes are different shapes, all photos are of my left eye.

I think the pictures really speak for themselves – this is a fantastic mascara, and a real drugstore gem!
