Revlon Fifth Avenue Red Vintage Lipstick Review & Swatches

Purchased – No Affiliate Links

Revlon recently rereleased five “vintage” discontinued shades from the Super Lustrous lipstick line. The rereleased shades are (sadly!) limited edition this time around. I really like the Super Lustrous lipsticks – they are creamy, comfortable to wear, and have no scent. Note that the creme finish Super Lustrous lipsticks are different from the previously reviewed Super Lustrous Shine lipsticks (there are also shimmer/frost finish & matte finish Super Lustrous lipsticks – I don’t own any of the shimmers, but the mattes are great).

The five rereleased shades are, as you see above, Icy Violet, Snow Peach, Sandstorm, Fifth Ave Red, and Jungle Peach. I found a full display, but only one of the shades called to me – Fifth Ave Red. And it is a fantastic red! The color is gorgeous, a deep true red – and the formula is as good as I expect the Super Lustrous lipsticks to be.

Revlon Fifth Ave Red – it has no sparkle, it’s just the way the light reflecting back.

Revlon Fifth Ave Red – this is the most color-accurate swatch.

The lip swatch above is more color-accurate than the partial face picture below.

This swatch is slightly less color-accurate – it’s a bit washed out, but I wanted to show how it reads on the face.

Did you pick up any of the rereleased / vintage shades?

Revlon By Marchesa Pink Cognito Super Lustrous Shine Lipstick

Purchased – Affiliate Links

Revlon has done a few collaborations with Marchesa over the past few months. In Fall 2013, they released a limited edition collection of nail appliques. They’re no longer available (unless you find them in a less-trafficked drugstore), but you can see all the designs on the Revlon website here.

Next, they released a collection of Marchesa – patterned beauty tools – a compact mirror, nail implements and files, brushes, and tweezers. The Revlon website says that these are limited edition, but at the moment some items are available to purchase on Ulta.com and drugstore.com.  I’ve also seen them around at a couple CVS stores. Visee Creamy Lipstick RD400 & RD401 Review & Swatches

Kose Visee creamy lipstick rd401 rd400

When the lovely Belly of Wondegondigo -->posted about --> the Visee Creamy Lipstick in RD401, a lemming was born. I ended up deciding that the formula sounded so good that I would order not just one, but two of the lipsticks. I selected RD401, which on me reads a bright reddened pink – it’s the color Belly originally wrote about – and RD400, which I hoped would be a nice neutral / mlbb type shade (and it is!).

Visee Creamy Lipstick – outer packaging

Visee is a sub-brand under the larger brand Kose, and I don’t know much about it – it’s from Japan, and it’s sold in drugstores there. I believe the Creamy Lipsticks retail for somewhere around ¥1500 ($15), and I bought mine for ¥2250 JPY (around $22) each, including shipping, from Ichibankao – not too bad of a markup. They’re also available from eBay and a few other online retailers for around the same price. Continue reading

NYX Licorice Butter Lipstick and Devil’s Food Cake Butter Gloss Review & Swatches

Purchased – Affiliate Links

 After I posted my IMATS purchases, I got a few comments asking for swatches of the NYX Butter Lipstick & Butter Gloss.  NYX released the Butter Gloss ($4.99, Ulta) a couple years ago, and due to it’s popularity released Butter Lip Balm ($3.99, Ulta), and now there’s a Butter Lipstick ($5.99, Ulta) and more shades of the gloss.

I have a very mixed relationship with NYX products – find all my NYX reviews here – but I really like the Butter Glosses and can see why they’re so popular – smooth, non-sticky, and reasonably moisturizing. I also have one Butter Lip Balm, Biscotti, and while it’s a nice my-lips-but-better color, I find the texture a little stiff and don’t find it particularly moisturizing.

NYC Expert Last Lipsticks

NYC Expert Last Lipsticks:
Blue Rose // Creamy Caramel // Traffic Jam // Berry Me // Coralista

NYC has released several new (and permanent) products for 2014. They’re all viewable online at -->newyorkcolor.com --> now, but I can’t find a way to view all the new products together. So far I’ve noticed the following products which I think are new:

  • -->Expert Last Lipstick -->
  • -->City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color --> (jumbo lip crayons)
  • -->Skin Matching Luminizer --> (a foundation)
  • -->Smooth Skin BB Cream -->
  • -->Smooth Skin Mousse Foundation -->
  • New shades of several products, including nail polish, eyeshadow, and eyeliner.
  • A new gold flake -->topcoat -->, which I have and will review soon.

Today, I have five of the new $1.99 Expert Last Lipsticks – there were ten in the display, and there are -->twenty shades --> listed online.

NYC Expert Last Lipstick Blue Rose Creamy Caramel Traffic Jam Berry Me Coralista

Blue Rose // Creamy Caramel // Traffic Jam // Berry Me // Coralista

The lipsticks are packaged in coordinating colored plastic; note that some of the plastic casings are shimmery when the lipsticks are not and vice versa.  The lipsticks, unfortunately, do not retract fully into the tubes, so you’ll need to be careful not to nick them with the lid.

In terms of texture, they lipsticks are fairly creamy and apply smoothly, but feel very faintly gritty to me. It’s not noticeable enough to be a problem, but they don’t feel luxurious either.  The have a faint fruity-chemical scent, which is light enough not to bother me.

NYC Expert Last Lipstick Swatches - Blue Rose // Creamy Caramel // Traffic Jam // Berry Me // Coralista

Blue Rose // Creamy Caramel // Traffic Jam // Berry Me // Coralista

The lipsticks are moderately pigmented except for Creamy Caramel, which is noticeably more sheer. Above, I’ve done three swipes of Creamy Caramel and two swipes with each of the others.

Blue Rose is a bright fuchsia with a very slight blue sheen. I don’t usually go for this type of color, but I quite like this one.

Creamy Caramel is a creme finish nude/brown; in addition to being sheerer than the other shades, it’s slightly more emollient and has a better texture. It’s a really nice nude on me – this is my favorite of the bunch.

Traffic Jam is a creme finish bright red. It’s fine, but nothing to write home about – there are several other options for a sub-$3 red lipstick that I prefer.

Berry Me is a creme finish berry – mauve. It’s a really nice color.

Coralista is an orange with a strong white base and silver glitter, though the glitter is not particularly noticeable when applied. This one clung to the dry patches on my lips and looked terrible in person – much worse than in the photo.

Overall, I’d say that these are decent but unremarkable. For $2 – and frequently on sale – they’re worth the price, and are a good option if you want to try out a color you don’t usually like. However, even in this price range, there are better options – I prefer the formulas of Wet n Wild’s lipsticks (MegaLast, Perfect Pout, and Silk Finish), ELF’s Moisturizing Lipsticks, and of course I love the formula of Black Radiance lipsticks.

Milani Power Lip Gloss Stain Swatches & Review

Purchased – No Affiliate Links

Milani has released several new items for 2014, and although they’re not yet online, they are starting to show up in stores. Earlier this week, I purchased two Power Lip gloss stains, and I am loving them so far!

The Power Lips are packaged in short, squat tubes, and dispense through a dense white brush tip. Be careful when you start to twist them, because there will be no product, no product, no product . . . then BAM, too much product! This is true of every similarly packaged item I have tried, though.   Continue reading
