Sephora Color Hit Nail Polish Review & Swatches

Press Sample – Affiliate Links

Sephora Makeup Academy Nails

I recently received some polishes from Sephora, including the Makeup Academy Nails set.  However, the set was already on sale when I received it and is now out of stock – so instead of reviewing the set as a whole, I’ll be reviewing the included polishes. Not all the polishes are available alone at the moment, but hopefully my thoughts on the formula, brush, bottle, etc will be helpful!

Sephora Collection Color Hit polishes retail for $5 each and are 5ml each – they also tend to be available in a variety of sets for a discount; e.g. this set of 5 that is currently selling for $12.  To get a sense of the size, OPI minis are 3.75ml; Sally Girl polishes are 5.3 ml, Color Club minis are 7ml, and Zoya minis are 7.5ml.  Full size polishes are generally 10-15ml. At $5 each, these Sephora polishes are very expensive for their size – if they were the same size as OPI polishes, they would be $15 each.  Now, if you’re more concerned with variety than with quantity (as I am, since I don’t expect to ever finish a color polish), you’d probably rather pay $5 for a mini than $8 for a full size polish! But, the size and price are something to keep in mind.

While the bottles are small, the shape is fantastic. I often have trouble opening polish bottles, especially with wet nails (I try to open everything I need in advance, but frequently forget).  The oval shape means that these are very easy to open – you get a lot more leverage than with a round handle!  The caps tend to line up nicely when you put the top back on, but if they don’t, you can pull the black cap off of the top in order to reposition it.

The brush is on the wide side and has a tendency to pick up a lot of polish, so I found that it was important to wipe it off thoroughly before applying polish. The shape works well for my nails though – I have fairly wide nails – and I found it easy to use and especially easy to get a nice clean line near the cuticle.  However, if you have narrow nails, this brush shape may not work well for you.

Sally Hansen Go Gold & Silk Onyx Satin Glam Swatches

Purchased – No Affiliate Links

Go Gold // Silk Onyx

As I mentioned, I purchased two of Sally Hansen’s new Satin Glam polishes a few days ago. They sell for around $5 each, and the bottle is quite small – .33oz. The bottle is identical to the Lustre Shine bottles.

Here’s the display again (and a sharper picture this time).

Pink Chic // Teal Tulle // Taffeta, Black Onyx // Taffeta
Go Gold // Crystalline // Metal End // Sun Sheen

I did a quick swatch using both colors I bought, Go Gold and Silk Onyx

Black Onyx & Go Gold

It’s a bit difficult to see the finish in photos, but these are definitely satin / a soft matte.

Of course, you can add topcoat to make these glossy. I found that Go Gold looks doesn’t change, but topcoat makes the multicolored sparkle Black Onyx visible. I don’t have a good swatch photo of the mani topcoated, but here’s a fuzzy close up where you can see the sparkle in Black Onyx.

Sparkle!

You can also see what they look like when glossy from looking at the bottles.

I’m sure many of you are wondering how these compare to Zoya’s recently re-released satin finish shades, but I don’t own any of the Zoya satins, so I really don’t know. They do look like they have a similar finish based though, just based on swatches I’ve seen.

Do you prefer glossy nails, or do you like different textures?

NYC Nail Polish Swatches – Quick Dry

Purchased

This year, NYC added several new shades of nail polish to its lineup in both the 99 cent Long Wearing nail polish line and the $1.99 Quick Dry nail polish line. They’re some of my favorite polishes – uniformly good quality, not to mention cheap! During various sales, I’ve purchased quite a few polishes from each line. Today, I have swatches of 17 of the 28 permanent Quick Dry polishes for you, and I’ll have swatches of the other line in a separate post.

You can see a list of all the available colors on the  -->NYC website --> – 27 colors plus Grand Central Station, which is clear. It’s my favorite inexpensive topcoat – I’ve gone through a couple bottles.

First, the bright cremes:

Maybelline Holographic Effect Polishes – Spotted at CVS

Lavender Lustre // Alluring Rose

Yesterday, I spotted a display with five new Maybelline Color Show polishes – called the Holographic collection (now available online). Unfortunately, it turns out that they aren’t holo – or even meant to be holo! There is a description of the collection on Maybelline Canada’s website, and it says that they “shift from shade to shade depending on the angle” – that is, they’re meant to be duochrome (they are not very strong duochromes, though).  If you’re not familiar with the difference between holo and duochrome polishes, Nihrida has a -->guide to nail polish finishes -->.

However, as disappointing as this collection is, I still have information about all the shades & swatches of two of them.
