Drugstore Beauty Favorites: Kristin Bassett from beautyXposé

Affiliate Links

I thought it would be fun (and useful!) to have some bloggers write about their favorite drugstore makeup & beauty products. First up, we have Kristin Bassett from beautyXposé.

Kristin’s beauty motto?  Less is more.  She is the queen of simplicity and the “natural look.”  You won’t spot this beauty buff sporting heavy makeup anytime soon, unless you run into her at a costume party.

Like any respectable beauty blogger, I love spending hours upon hours at Sephora. However, I don’t always love the amount of money I can drop there in just minutes, let alone in hours.

So, how do I feed my need for beauty products without breaking the bank? The drugstore beauty aisle, of course! I’ve tried hundreds of drugstore beauty products over the years. Some I hated, so I liked but didn’t think twice about when they ran out. There are only a handful of beauty products, drugstore or high-end, that I can’t live without anymore. Here are the five drugstore beauty products that are always stocked in my beauty closet: Continue reading

CoverGirl Copper Fling Bombshell Shine Shadow Review & Swatches

Purchased – Affiliate Links

One of Covergirl’s new 2014 releases is the Bombshell Shineshadow, a sparkling cream shadow packaged in a small tube. It’s available online for $8.99 from Ulta / Drugstore.com, and for $6.99 from Target. (By the way, Ulta is currently having a 20% off almost everything – including most prestige brands.  Go to ulta.com/friends and enter your information to get a coupon emailed to you, valid online & in-store through January 18th.)

Back to the Bombshell Shineshadow: I don’t love the packaging – using a tube works well, but it really needs a tapered / nozzle tip rather than the flat tip, because you only need a little and the current flat tip is not precise enough.

The shadow is quite creamy, and I found that it applied best with a brush.  If I use my fingers, I accidentally blend away too much – but with a brush, I can get more opaque coverage.  I have tried out the shadow both as a base and worn alone, and it didn’t crease on me.

I puchased the shade Copper Fling, which is a peachy copper that is relatively close to my skintone.  It’s quite subtle (not blingy like I expected!), and, I think, quite pretty.

Overall, this is quite a nice cream eyeshadow – it applies and it wears well, and has just the right amount of sparkle for my tastes. Recommended!

CoverGirl TruBlend Foundation Review, Swatches, Photos

Purchased – Affiliate Links

CoverGirl recently released a reformulated version of their TruBlend Liquid Makeup foundations.  There are a couple different versions of the temporary displays in drugstores now, and some of them have testers of all 21 shades! I was so excited to see this that I swatched several, and found what I thought was a good match in Light 7, Warm Beige.

It’s a thick, creamy, medium-to-full coverage foundation that dries down to a satiny, semi-matte finish on my dry skin.

It’s obviously darker and warmer than my inner arm, and although I initially thought it matched my face well, seeing the below before and after makes me think that it’s not actually a good match at all – though I swear it looks better in person!

Covergirl TruBlend Before After

No makeup // Covergirl TruBlend foundation only

I like the creamy texture (it contains several silicones), and find it easy to blend, and easy to adjust the coverage level. In the “after” picture above, I have one layer of foundation on my nose, inner cheeks, and between my brows, two layers of foundation on my chin, and the foundation is blended away into nothingness near my hairline.

The foundation has no sunscreen (which I prefer; I use my own sunscreen daily), and when I took a few flash photos, I didn’t notice any flashback effect.

What foundations have you been wearing lately?

CoverGirl TruMagic The Sunkisser Review & Swatches

Purchased – Affiliate Links

Covergirl recently released three “skin perfectors”, called the truMagic “The Perfector”, “The Sunkisser”, and “The Luminizer”.  They’re silicone-based, and Covergirl categorizes them online as primers and claims that they create a “soft, smooth finish” that “controls shine” and “won’t clog pores.”  They are permanent, and now available online at Ulta.com & drugstore.com – drugstore.com also has a mini version available for around $5, which I haven’t seen in stores.

The first thing I noticed is that the packaging is WAY bulkier than it needs to be.

There is no reason it can’t have a flat lid! I guess you could store a sponge in there (it comes with one), but it seems like a bad idea to store a sponge on top of a cream.

Packaging aside, the product itself is very nice. It feels like cross between a silicone primer and a cream to powder blush. I think the name “sunkisser” is a good one – at least on my skintone (around MAC NC20), it does create a natural sunkissed / bronzed look.

heavy swatch // blended out

I rarely wear bronzer on my face, so lately I’ve been using this on my neck, to even out my skintone (my neck is much lighter than my face, despite daily sunscreen).  I find that it lasts well & doesn’t rub off on my clothing.  It’s easy to apply lightly or heavily – a sponge gives heavier coverage than fingers – and looks natural both ways.

I can’t really speak to controlling shine, because (especially in the winter), my skin produces very little oil. Luckily, this doesn’t seem to dry out my skin!

Overall, I would recommend this as a lightweight, matte finish cream bronzer.
