So, why the hiatus?

L'oreal LaLaque LeMatte - Wet n Wild Limited Edition Trios - Maybelline Color Elixir Gloss

some recent-ish drugstore purchases

It’s been quite a while since I posted. Rather than just jumping back into reviews and such, I thought I’d take a little time to write about the (unplanned!) hiatus.

At first, I stopped blogging just because I was busy – mostly wedding planning, but also a job search and a minor health issue (now resolved, thankfully).  At first, my “to-review” pile grew larger, and I – feeling guilty for not posting – left all my new products untouched so I could have pristine product photos.  As the pile grew larger, I felt worse & worse about it – I felt bad for not reviewing what I purchased, bad for leaving items untouched for so long, and bad because I wasn’t even looking forward to blogging again. Blogging, and especially reviewing new products, had turned into something I felt I had to do, rather than something I wanted to do.

Maybelline Baby Lips Electro

I think I bought these in July.

Eventually, I opened up all the new products and incorporated them into my stash.  I stopped buying new items just because they were there & I thought others would want to read about them.  I started buying only what I actually wanted to try out or have for myself.  I read some fantastic posts about blogging and consumerism, especially from Belly – she’s written a lot on this subject, and then more recently from Kate.  I realized that most of the reason this blog wasn’t as fun anymore was because the focus had shifted away from from writing about things I love and/or I’m interested in – and shifted to reviewing & swatching the shiniest, newest items.

So, I’m going to try and refocus this blog to make it more fun for me.  I’m not really sure what that means; I do love to try new things, so I’m sure there will still be plenty of reviews. But I’m now more focused playing with the makeup already I have, and buying only what *I* want – not what I think others want to read about.  I’m not really sure how often I’ll be blogging in the future – probably less than I was for a while, hopefully more than I have these past few months.

A Small Update

From earlier this week, when they were feeling better – do you see Essie on the bottom level?
(this is a temporary play structure – we had a big cat tree delivered today)

Hi all – I want to apologize for the lack of updates from the last few days, and let you all know that it may be a day or two before I start updating again! Unfortunately, everyone at my house is a bit sick. My fiancee and I have bad colds, but are basically fine, but the new kittens are really quick ill – they’ve been to the vet many, many times over the past few days and have spent the past few nights in the animal hospital with high fevers.  Right now, it’s looking like they are going to make it, but we weren’t sure for a while. They’re not completely out of the danger zone – fevers are down, but neither has eaten for a while now. Please send good thoughts their way!

Updated Stash Pictures and a Personal Update

Hi all – you may have noticed it’s been a little quiet on the Project Swatch front lately, and I wanted to let you know what was going on.   In addition to being quite busy studying for the upcoming bar exam, my wonderful, sweet dog was just diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on Monday.  It’s a form of cancer, and she’ll be having surgery this Sunday to remove it.  We will find out after they biopsy it what stage it’s at and what her future prognosis is; I’m very worried about her. She’s a real sweetheart and I love her so much.

My dog, Zoe

I have a bunch of things I want to review, and I think I’ll be able to get back to reviews in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I took some stash pictures for you! I recently (last week or so) cleaned out my vanity, organized my makeup, and boxed up about a quarter of it – I put aside the things I don’t use very often so that the things I do use and love would be more accessible.  I’ll see if I miss the things I set aside, and if I don’t, I’ll eventually sell/swap/give away those items.  Note that you can see previous stash photos under the stash tag to the right.

In the top photo (top of the post) you can see my vanity; on top of my vanity, I have some daily-use items, like my Guerlain Compact Meteorites, Anastasia Brow Powder Duo, brush cleanser, moisturizer, and a couple other assorted items.  I also have my brushes (face in one container; eye in the other).  On the left side, I have a lipstick holder (from the Container Store) with my favorite low-end lipsticks; the right side has a lipstick holder with my favorite high-end lipsticks.

In the top center drawer, I have eyeshadows (including eyeshadow primer).  Here they are in the drawer:

And here they are out of the drawer, so you can see what I have – as you can see, I have become a big fan of depotting; it really helps me see what I have an use it more frequently!  Edit: I just realized that this photo is missing two of my favorite palettes; the Illamasqua Neutral Palette and the UD Naked Palette, both of which were in the other room when I took the photographs. Oops!

eyeshadow!

The top drawer on the left side has jewelry and some perfume samples, so I haven’t photographed it. The next drawer down has lip items.  This contains lip items that either don’t fit into the acrylic lipstick holders (like NARS lip pencils or Revlon Balm Stains, both of which I adore), or that I simply don’t use as often.

In the next drawer down, I have all the eye products that are not eyeshadow: which ends up meaning different types of eyeliner (pencil, gel, pen, cake), a couple mascaras, and tools (eyelash curler, sharpener, and the odd looking thing is an eyelash guard – it’s awesome, and I have been planning to do a post on it).

eye makeup things

The next drawer contains my cheek products: blush, highlighter, contour powder, and bronzer.  This is the most disorganized drawer, mostly because I simply have too much to fit neatly into the drawer, even after putting aside many products that I actually do really like – but have near dupes of.

blush, highlighter, contour, and bronzer

And finally, my “face product” drawer – foundation, concealer, and mineral powder, along with a couple samples.  I don’t use face primer, and I love the Guerlain powder so much (not pictured, as I keep it on top of my vanity) so much that I have set aside all of my other translucent/ finishing powders.

Foundations, concealers, mineral powders

The bottom drawer is a mess, so I didn’t photograph it – it has makeup wipes, false eyelashes, and a couple other miscellaneous items along those lines.

I hope to be back to regular posting soon!

FOTD: Illamasqua Neutral Palette and NARS Cruella

Lots of pictures for you today! Here’s a FOTD / EOTD from my vacation – the eye look was done with the Illamasqua Neutral Palette, which I am continuing to love, and my lips are NARS Velvet Matte lip pencil in Cruella, a long time favorite. Please forgive my eyebrows, which need grooming!

And, on a non-makeup note, here is the view from the balcony of our room on vacation (we were in Temecula, which is the Southern California wine country)

And one last photo – my engagement ring! I had it custom made, and we picked it up on Wednesday. I absolutely love it, it’s just perfect for me.

Engaged!

One of her friends was hiding and photographing

I know I’ve been absent for a couple days . . . now I can explain why! My beautiful, wonderful girlfriend M – now fiancee! – proposed to me on Friday night. I accepted (of course!) and we’re so, so happy and excited. We’ve been together for about a year and eight months, and I love her so much.

She knew I wanted us to pick out rings together, so she proposed with this beautiful interlocking ring necklace. I absolutely love it – it’s exactly my style, it’s so, so perfect.  I just couldn’t be happier.

Regular posting to resume tomorrow!

Seven Deadly Sins of Beauty

Liz at Beauty Reductionista did a really fun “Seven Deadly Sins” beauty tag, and I thought I’d play along!

1. GREED: What is your most inexpensive beauty item? What is your most expensive?

Most expensive is definitely Guerlain’s Parure de Nuit for $67.

Least expensive is several 99 cent Wet n Wild items, including Black Creme nailpolish and the Silk Finish lipsticks (Cinnamon is my favorite)

2. WRATH: What beauty products do you have a love/hate relationship with? What product has been the hardest to get?

I guess I have a love / hate relationship with mascara – it’s the one product I wear virtually every day, and I love it, but it’s such a pain to remove. I’ve always worn waterproof, but I’m considering switching to regular.

Hardest to get was probably the Naked Palette – I stalked Sephora.com for quite a while!

3. GLUTTONY: What are your most delicious beauty products?

I have no idea – maybe the Body Shop Mango body butter?

4. SLOTH: What beauty product do you neglect, due to laziness?

I don’t wear eyeshadow very often (despite owning quite a lot) because it takes a while to put on.

5. PRIDE: What beauty product gives you the most self confidence?

Lipstick – especially bright and bold colors.

6. LUST: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?
6. LUST: What beauty product are you lusting over right now?

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Foundation & Pressed Meterorites powder! I’ve been testing out a sample of the foundation and I LOVE it. Guerlain is my favorite luxury brand by far.

7. ENVY: What items would you most like to receive as a gift?

The above 🙂 Or maybe a Sephora gift card!

If you’d like to play, here are the questions!
