Mid/High End Red Lipstick Swatches & Comparisons

high end red lipstick

I’ve swatched many of my drugstore red lipsticks – this post has swatches of $2 and under drugstore red lipsticks – but I haven’t swatched all of my many, many red lipsticks. I’ve decided to change that! I’m starting with my mid/high end red lipsticks in this post.

The hardest part was actually deciding what qualified as red.  I picked out the lipsticks that look red to my eye, and included a couple sheer reds, and lipsticks that others says are sheer red on them (even though they aren’t very red on me). I excluded anything I would categorize as a vampy shade or as predominantly berry, pink, or coral, even if it has red tones.  I included liquid lipsticks, but excluded glosses – I’ll swatch my red glosses in a separate post. This left me with eleven shades.

First, skin swatches:

Someday I will re-review this; I link to it frequently, and it’s such an old review! I still love it just as much I did when I first bought it. This is my pick for a matte red.

I still adore this one too – it’s my pick for a non-matte bright red.

It’s a pity that this was limited edition – it’s really a great color. If MAC brings it back and you’re looking for a deep red, I would recommend it without hesitation.

I picked this up a CCO (a makeup outlet store that sells Estee Lauder brands), and I love both the color and the texture. Again, wish this were permanent! This shade bridges the divide between red and vampy.

This is a very sheer red; the swatch is several layers.  Very easy to wear!

I’ve heard this described many times as a sheer red, but it looks more pink on me; still, I thought I’d include it for completeness’s sake.

This is another (supposed) sheer red that doesn’t look red at all on me, though I do see sheer red in the skin swatch.  I do love it though; it’s very flattering and goes with almost anything.

Still to come: red lipgloss swatches, and more (many more!) drugstore red lipstick swatches.

A Discontinued Classic: Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque

As a red lipstick lover, I’ve regretted not buying Chanel Dragon Rouge Allure Laque liquid lipstick many times.  It’s a classic shade and a popular favorite, but was discontinued about a year ago.  At the moment, it’s going for about $100 on ebay – way too much for me to consider.  But, a few weeks ago I got lucky and found it on a blogsale for only $25 (and almost unused, too – only swatched with a separate applicator).  So – is it worth the hype?

The packaging is really lovely – a substantial feeling, black square tube. It’s functional and elegant.  I also love the applicator – it’s a variation on a doe-foot applicator, but with a slanted tip that makes the product easy to apply precisely.

The formula is as good as I expected – smooth, creamy, and pigmented.  It’s comfortable to wear, and very long lasting.  It does transfer more than I prefer, but that’s to be expected since it has a slightly glossy finish.

The color is beautiful as well – somehow it manages to be both bright and dark red.  It’s a very balanced, true red – to my eye, it doesn’t lean warm or cool, and I can imagine it looking great on anyone.  Many red lipsticks turn pink on me, but this one stays very true to the swatched color.

I’ve heard that Shiseido RD607 Nocturne (reviewed here) is similar to Chanel Dragon, and I also wanted to see how Rouge d’Armani 400 (reviewed here) compared, so below I have swatches of all three together.  As you can see, both are fairly close, but neither are dupes – Nocturne is slightly darker than Dragon, and RdA 400 is brighter.  Nocturne is closer in texture, but also has microglitter (not very visible when first applied, but quite visible when blotted).

Overall – love!  This is just as fantastic as I hoped it would be, and I am thrilled to have it in my collection.  It’s really a pity that Chanel discontinued something this beautiful.  If you have the opportunity to buy Dragon, I would absolutely snap it up – it’s a classic for a reason.
