So, why the hiatus?

L'oreal LaLaque LeMatte - Wet n Wild Limited Edition Trios - Maybelline Color Elixir Gloss

some recent-ish drugstore purchases

It’s been quite a while since I posted. Rather than just jumping back into reviews and such, I thought I’d take a little time to write about the (unplanned!) hiatus.

At first, I stopped blogging just because I was busy – mostly wedding planning, but also a job search and a minor health issue (now resolved, thankfully).  At first, my “to-review” pile grew larger, and I – feeling guilty for not posting – left all my new products untouched so I could have pristine product photos.  As the pile grew larger, I felt worse & worse about it – I felt bad for not reviewing what I purchased, bad for leaving items untouched for so long, and bad because I wasn’t even looking forward to blogging again. Blogging, and especially reviewing new products, had turned into something I felt I had to do, rather than something I wanted to do.

Maybelline Baby Lips Electro

I think I bought these in July.

Eventually, I opened up all the new products and incorporated them into my stash.  I stopped buying new items just because they were there & I thought others would want to read about them.  I started buying only what I actually wanted to try out or have for myself.  I read some fantastic posts about blogging and consumerism, especially from Belly – she’s written a lot on this subject, and then more recently from Kate.  I realized that most of the reason this blog wasn’t as fun anymore was because the focus had shifted away from from writing about things I love and/or I’m interested in – and shifted to reviewing & swatching the shiniest, newest items.

So, I’m going to try and refocus this blog to make it more fun for me.  I’m not really sure what that means; I do love to try new things, so I’m sure there will still be plenty of reviews. But I’m now more focused playing with the makeup already I have, and buying only what *I* want – not what I think others want to read about.  I’m not really sure how often I’ll be blogging in the future – probably less than I was for a while, hopefully more than I have these past few months.

Surratt Beauty

my most recent purchases (from today) – a few items from the new Surratt Beauty line

A few wedding photos after the jump, for those that requested them!

the veil was my great-grandmothers, and I was the 7th woman in my family to wear it

Wedding 1

two brides, three bridesmaids, five bouquets

we got married at the los angeles public library (the central location, downtown)

And to those who have reached out to me in my absence, thank you! The one thing I consistently missed the whole time I was away was interacting with all of you.

I purchased all items photographed for this post. This post does not contain any affiliate links.

Congratulations! So lovely! And I know what you mean about buying things just to blog about them. I constantly have to stop myself from buying something just so I can write a comparison post. If I can do that, it means that I already have something too similar, and it’s not useful! Anyway, glad to see you back, and I hope you have more fun with it!

    • Thank you! Yeah, when I first started blogging, I really didn’t have that much makeup – so it more or less worked for me to buy things just because they were new, because odds were I didn’t have something similar. Now, I usually do, so it makes less sense to just buy ALL THE THINGS.

  • beautiful photos emi! and i’m so glad your back!
i remember reading all your posts when they came up and finally taking the plunge into blogging. i feel the same way you do to!! sometimes i catch myself buying soemthing i dont really care about just to test it out for the blog i think thats what other people want to hear about!! need to refocus myself as well. thanks for sharing your opinion on this!

  • So nice to see you back! Huge congrats on the wedding- you looked lovely 🙂

  • Congrats !

  • Ok first of all, WELCOME BACK, Emi! I’ve been on a “leave of absence” from blogging for a while too, so I definitely understand! And good for you for realizing what was missing from blogging and refocusing your commitment and intentions toward a goal that will make you happier 🙂

Secondly, WOW WOW WOW! You and your wife both look SO beautiful, Emi! Congratulations!!! Blushing brides indeed 🙂 everything from the dresses to hair and makeup to bridesmaid colors and beautiful flowers…everything was so perfect. Love that you had the wedding at the Public Library too! Congrats again and many warm wishes to you and your new wife! <3

    • Thank you so much Becca! I hope things slow down at work for you so that you get to blog more, too 🙂

  • Beautiful wedding! Congratulations!!! 🙂

  • Bellyhead

Emi! Your beautiful pictures (the wedding, not the Surratt) filled me up with a happy smile. Congratulations to you both. Gosh, you both look so beautiful.
I’m happy to see you blog and so looking forward to seeing you posts on stuff you love and things that get you the most excited!

    • Thank you so much, Belly! I really love how thoughtful your musings are – they really helped me figure out what was going on with me.

  • Sonny

Congrats to you and your beautiful bride Emi. You look amazing! I missed your candid reviews and beautiful pics. We look forward to your posts about the products you love.

  • Pam

Your bouquets are STUNNING! Can you tell us how you chose them and what the flowers are?
I love the story about your veil. Congratulations to both of you beautiful brides!

    • Thank you! We worked with the florist to figure out the bouquets – neither I nor my wife(!) know much about flowers, so we told our florist what colors we liked & were using for the wedding, and she showed us pictures of different flowers & had us choose our favorites. I know that there are ivory calla lilies, pale purple roses, & I think some of the blue ones are delphiniums, but I don’t know what all of them are 🙂

(Incidentally, if anyone in the Los Angeles area wants a recommendation for a photographer, florist, or DJ, let me know!)

Congratulations! Your wedding pics are really beautiful!

I totally understand how you lost track of what you really wanted/liked and how blogging can start feeling like work. I used to blog very regularly, almost daily (on my French blog) for over a year. Then I decided to launch the English version and things went downhill. I started to feel like it was a second job and not so much fun anymore. I now post a couple times a month in English and almost not at all in French. I’m not happy with this situation but I haven’t been able to find a balance between blogging, my actual job and other activities that matter to me.

Anyway, I’ll be very happy to read your thoughts about the products you really enjoy!

  • Aww congratulations, Emi! You look so happy and beautiful! How amazing is it that you got to wear your great-grandmother’s veil?

I see your point as well. It is best to buy something that you actually want than something that you just want to blog about and then will never use, and don’t make blogging feel like a real job. I sometimes fall into this trap too, then one day my fiance looked at me and said:” you don’t owe anyone anything.” So that’s what I tell myself when I can’t squeeze anything out 😉

    • Thank you Sunny! It was really special to wear the veil 🙂 And I like what your fiance said!

  • Kate Driveller

Congratulations, Emi! I can’t tell you how beautiful you both look 😀 And you got married at a LIBRARY? And you picked COBALT for the bridesmaids? Er… you two open to the idea of me as a sister-wife?? ;D

Also glad you’re ‘back’ in the sphere, on terms you feel better with :*

    • Thank you! We are currently accepting sister-wife applications, and the application fee can be paid in product 😀

  • Nesita

Congratulations! You both seriously glow in these pictures ^^

  • Monica – Pisica Albastra

Congratulations! I wish you both happiness everlasting!
And I’m looking forward to your future posts 🙂

  • Sachi

  • Congratulations, Emi! You both look so beautiful! 🙂

And good for you, for only buying things you want to try, instead of stressing out about the blog. Glad to see you back!

  • Icequeen81
