Today, while browsing at Rite Aide, I came across a display of Maybelline Great Lash colored mascara – Pop of Purple, Blink of Blue, Go Go Green, and Totally Teal. Although I’m not generally a fan of Great Lash mascara, I have been wanting an inexpensive purple mascara, so I decided to buy Pop of Purple.
The tube is pretty cute, and the purple is quite a nice shade – it’s a medium purple that has a nice balance of red and blue tones. The following picture is with flash – otherwise, I couldn’t get the color on the wand to show up in the photo:
This swatch photo is in natural light:
In person, I could see the color on my almost-black eyelashes, but it is VERY subtle. It’s much more apparent in the following picture that in person:
So, I tried it over a white primer (Diorshow Maximizer), with the following results – my eyelashes are much longer (I love that primer!), and the color is just a little bit more apparent.
In terms of formula, it seems to be the standard Great Lash formula, which I do not like, though I haven’t tried it out for many years now. I haven’t had trouble with smudging or flaking, but I just don’t like the application; I get very little length or volume, and lots of clumping – which you can see in the no primer picture above.
Overall for around $6 (I’m not sure exactly what I paid, or where my receipt is), it’s worth it to me to have an inexpensive purple mascara. I wish the color was a little brighter and the formula was a little better, but it’s still a fun purchase.
