Ellis Faas Creamy Lips L101

One of the brands I was excited to check out at The Makeup Show was Ellis Faas; I had heard so much about this brand (and it’s somewhat controversial applicators), but hadn’t tried any of its products.  I’ve already reviewed the concealer I purchased (which I love!).  In that review, I mentioned that I also received another Ellis Faas product to try out, and that’s what I have for you today: Creamy Lips in the brand’s signature shade, Ellis Red.

For general thoughts on the bullet packaging / applicator system, please see my prior post.  Instead of a brush, the Creamy Lips applicator is a sort of hard sponge tip; it’s covered in a soft material, but it’s firm and not dentable.  I find that the applicator works quite well with the texture of this specific product – I can apply the lipstick straight from the applicator if needed.  However, I prefer a crisper line on my upper lip than I can achieve with the applicator, so I’ve been using a lip brush most of the time.

The Creamy Lips product feels to me like a lightweight lip cream rather than a traditional lipstick. I keep wanting to repeat the word lightweight – I can barely feel it on my lips once applied. The texture just disappears into my lips, and (aside from the vivid color), it almost looks like I don’t have on any lip product at all; the texture of my lips is just the texture of my lips.

Part of Ellis Faas’s premise is that all of its products are ”human colors”  – colors that naturally exist in the human body.  The shade of Creamy Lips I have is L101, Ellis Red,  and is described as a blood red. On me, it’s a neutral medium red; not too dark, not too bright – very wearable and classic.  I’ve heard that some people find the wear time of Cream Lips to be fantastic, but I found it to be fairly average – if you’ve tried these products, how was it for you?

Overall, this is a really lovely product, but I’m not sure I would pay full price for it.  Don’t get me wrong – it’s a high quality product, I’d just rather choose something else to splurge on.  The applicator works, but I prefer a regular lipstick or a tube-style liquid lipstick.  The color is really lovely – a great neutral red – but not unique.  I do really love the texture, and if it were a bit longer lasting on me, I would be quite tempted to pick up another shade.

Creamy Lips retails for $35 and is available at Ellisfaas.com or Sephora.com; if you’re in Los Angeles, none of the Sephora stores carry the line, but Nigel Beauty (in North Hollywood) sells it in-store.

OCC Power Plant Lip Tar Review, Swatches, and Mixing!

OCC Power Plant Lip Tar

At first glance, OCC’s brand new lip tar, Power Plant, does not look even remotely wearable. A shimmery pale green? What am I going to do with that? However, after playing with it, I am very happy to have it in my stash; not to wear alone, but to mix.

Although I’ve tried – and swatched – many of OCC’s creme-finish lip tars, Power Plant was my first experience with OCC’s new metallic lip tar formula.  Like the creme finish lip tars, it has a peppermint scent (but no uncomfortable tingle on the lips), and like the creme finish lip tars, only a tiny amount should be used, or else the lip tar will feather and/or smear.

From a skin swatch, I had no idea what it would look like on the lips:

It turns out that alone, it looks – well – pretty bad. Not really wearable or flattering at all, even for most people who like nonstandard colors.  It looks frosty and cancels out some of my natural lip color for a very unflattering look.  I can imagine it being used quite effectively for an editorial look, however!

But, then I tried mixing it. First, I grabbed the nearest lip tar, which happened to be Radiate – perhaps my favorite of the lip tars I own.

I mixed them, and was surprised to find that almost-neon coral red plus metallic green makes a not-shimmery, dimensional rosy neutral.

The mixture here has a little bit too much Power Plant, so you can see a bit of a green highlight, but you get the idea.

Radiate + Power Plant = Surprise!

I was astonished by this gorgeous result; I guess I don’t understand color theory very well!

Here are some other creations using Power Plant lip tar:

I believe Sleek Pinkini Pout Paint is somewhat similar to OCC Anime Lip Tar.

I believe Sleek Pin Up is very similar to OCC NSFW Lip Tar.

Power Plant lip tar, as well as the matching Power Plant nail polish (which I swatched here) are supposed to be exclusive to Sephora.com; however, I’ve heard that the lip tar has been spotted in-store at Sephora.

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream Review & Swatches

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream

I love a good liquid lipstick, so I’m very happy that several have been launched over the past year or so , both high-end and drugstore.  Offhand, I can think of five – these NYX Xtreme Lip Creams are from early 2012, Wet n Wild recently released its Megalast Liquid Lip Colors (review), Shiseido’s Laquer Rouge was launched late last summer (review), Armani’s Lip Maestro – which I will eventually try! – is from last November, and Guerlain’s Rouge G L’Extrait, which looks lovely but so pricey, is from last summer.  The UK also has Rimmel Apocalips liquid lipstick, which I hope makes it to the US soon.

Packaging-wise, there isn’t much to say about the Xtreme Lip Creams – they’re in a standard tube with a doe foot applicator. I found the applicator easy to use, and was able to apply the lipsticks with it, though a lip brush does lead to a more precise application.

I initially purchased two shades, but I liked them so much I went back for three more, so I currently have five shades, out of the eleven in the range.

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream Swatches

Nude Peach Fuzz // Buttery Nude // Bonfire // Spicy // Absolute Red

As you can see, the Xtreme Lip Creams are quite pigmented.  I love the the pigmentation and the texture, because I am able to achieve full coverage with a very thin layer.  I find thin layers of lip product to be the most comfortable to wear, plus a thin layer is least likely to migrate outside the lip line and more transfer-resistant (though these do not really dry down, and thus they do transfer).

It’s also worth talking about my least favorite thing about the liquid lipsticks — the scent.  It’s sort of plastic-y and unpleasant, though it does fade quickly. It’s not enough to keep me from really enjoying the product, but if you’re more sensitive to smells than I am, it may really bother you.

In the lip swatches, you can see that the palest color (Nude Peach Fuzz) settles into lip lines a little bit and doesn’t look great – however, the four darker colors don’t have this problem at all, and look smooth and even on the lips.

Another nice thing about liquid lipsticks is that they’re easy to mix to create new shades – just dab a little bit of product on the back of your hand, mix, and apply with a lip brush!

Physician’s Formula Sexy Glow Red Glossy Stain Review & Swatches

Physician's Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain

Physician’s Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain

Last week, I purchased the Physician’s Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain in Hot Pink.  You can read my full review here, but the short version is that despite the tacky packaging, the fact that it isn’t very glossy, and doesn’t stain – I really liked it!

If you haven’t spotted these in your area yet, they’re available to buy online now at Drugstore.com.

So, a few days ago, I bought the red version too.  For a full review of the PF Glossy Stains, please see my earlier review – this post is just swatches of the red.

PF Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain – Red

First, the color is a bright, pretty cherry red – which stays true, and doesn’t turn pink at all on me. Yay!  It’s also a touch glossier than the Hot Pink shade, and even stains a bit more (though I think that’s just because reds tend to stain; it’s still more of a liquid lipstick than a stain).

Again, the PF Glossy Stain does not do what is promised – it is not ultra glossy, and it does not stain very well – but as a liquid lipstick, it’s a really lovely product, and I hope to see it released in more shades!

Physician’s Formula Sexy Glow Hot Pink Glossy Stain Review & Swatches

Physician's Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain - Hot Pink

Physician’s Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stain – Hot Pink

I am enamored of gloss / stain hybrids lately – I love both YSL Glossy Stains and the L’oreal Shine Caresse gloss stains.  So, when I saw a new Physician’s Formula product that claimed to be a glossy stain (and on sale for $3!), I knew I had to give it a try.  The Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Glossy Stains come in only two colors – Red and Hot Pink, and I bought Hot Pink.

First off, I hate the name of the “Sexy Booster” line of products, and the Sexy Glow name as well. Second, I hate the packaging with the little charm attached to the gloss.  I’m sure some will like it, but it is just not my style at all – I like sleek, minimalist packaging, and this is just the opposite (the charm and ribbon are not easily removable, by the way).

The packaging is functional – the charm is securely attached, the wand is a good shape to apply the gloss, and the package is sealed — very important for drugstore products! Here’s a close-up of the wand; it’s a similar shape to the other gloss stains I’ve tried.

And, here’s the package – as you can see, PF claims that this product has intense color, high shine, and kiss proof wear. It is also supposed to stain.

PF Glossy Stain package

Here’s a short version of my review: the glossy stain is not glossy, is not kiss proof, barely stains, and basically does nothing that it is advertised to do. However, as a long wearing liquid lipstick, it’s fantastic, and it’s a beautiful color – so despite the packaging, I really like it!

To expand: the glossy stain does absolutely have intense color.  It does not, however, have high shine. If I apply a normal amount, it has a low shine finish – just slightly glossy, more glossy than a satin, but not what I think of as a high shine finish.  If I apply an extra layer, it takes to to actually glossy, but it’s still not high shine, and with the extra layer it is quite messy and transfers on to absolutely everything.

I haven’t done an actual kiss test, but I assure you that this is not kiss proof. If I wear a normal amount without blotting, it transfers on to my coffee cup significantly – just as much as any non-matte lipstick, and more than a matte lipstick.  Of course, if I blot it enough, it will transfer less, but that’s true of any lip product.

It also doesn’t stain very well – it’s nothing like the YSL Glossy Stains or L’oreal Shine Caresse stains.  In the swatch below, I left it on my arm for several minutes, then wiped it off.  There is a faint stain, but nothing more than a reasonably pigmented lipstick would leave.  Compare to the L’oreal stains in this post.

Physician's Formula Glossy Stain - Hot Pink swatch

When worn, the Glossy Stain does wear down to a kind of a stain over several hours, but it’s not the type of stain left by a true lip stain; it’s the type of stain left by any pigmented lipstick. Does that make sense? The product isn’t actually a lip stain – it’s a pigmented liquid lipstick, that leaves a bit of a stain as it wears off.

Here’s my lip swatch.  And for a full face photo of me wearing this product, see this post.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the Physician’s Formula Glossy Stains – I’m planning to buy the red one too! It’s a really nice product – as long as you are looking for a liquid lipstick, and not a glossy stain.

If you haven’t seen this at a local drugstore yet, it’s online at Drugstore.com.
