NARS Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil Review & Swatches

Nars Satin Lip Pencil - Palais Royal-2

A few days ago, I posted swatches of all of the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils — and I know several of you have been waiting for this review since!

Note: As of 3/6, these are now available for purchase on Nordstrom.com!

First, some details – per the NARS facebook page, the pencils will become available on narscosmetics.com on March 7th; I believe they will show up at other online retailers and in stores a little later, but I don’t know the exact dates. They will sell for $25, which is the current price of the similarly-packaged Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss pencils. At the moment, you can purchase them through Pinterest; details on that on the NARS Facebook page, here.

Nars Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil Swatch-2

Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil

This review is for the shade Palais Royal, which is a gorgeous deep berry. It’s incredibly pigmented – the thinner line on the left is just one pass of the pencil, and I didn’t press hard at all; just a light touch yields that kind of color payoff. The pencils are quite soft, but not so soft I had trouble sharpening mine (it wouldn’t have needed sharpening, but I wanted to test it out). Here’s the sharpened tip:

Nars Satin Lip Pencil - Sharpened

You can see that there was no issue. I used my Urban Decay Grindhouse sharpener because I pulled it out of the drawer first, but Essence’s dupe is just as good.

The texture of this product is different than other products I have tried. It applies very smoothly, and at first it feels like a very glossy lipstick or a gloss/lipstick hybrid – sort of like Revlon’s lip butters, or maybe a lip butter crossed with a non-sticky gloss. Note that the glossier the finish is.  Here is a freshly applied swatch with a moderate amount of product – I could have easily used more for a higher gloss finish.

After about 30-45 minutes, the product sort of dries down and melds into my lips, and starts to have more of a natural finish / satin finish.  It absolutely does not create a film like some long-wearing lipsticks do – this is more like the glossiness just wears off, and you’re left with all the color and less of the shine.

It’s hard for me to give a wear time in terms of hours, because lipsticks last so differently from person to person and it also depends on whether you’re eating or drinking (and I’m using sipping on something).  This Satin Lip Pencil was moderately long-wearing on me; the product itself lasted a few hours, and then it left a stain on my lips which hung around for another few hours (and faded evenly – no ring around the lips!). It wasn’t one of the longest wearing products I’ve tried, but it wore longer than the average lipstick. I personally did not find it either hydrating or drying, but I rarely find any lipstick drying, so I’ll be curious to see what others think!

Here’s a half-face shot, so you can see the color better with my skintone – it’s really a gorgeous shade.

Nars Palais Royal Satin Lip Pencil Swatch-3

Overall, I think this is a lovely product and a great new offering from NARS.  I absolutely love this color, and think they did an exceptionally good job with the shade range.  I’m not sure that it will become one of my go-to products, both because I tend to prefer something that transfers less (this does transfer to coffee cups, etc. significantly, especially when freshly applied) and because I usually prefer a very long-wearing lip product.  But, those are just personal preferences – this is a high quality product, and worth checking out once it launches!

New NARS Satin Lip Pencil Swatches

NARS Satin Lip Pencil - Palais Royal

NARS Satin Lip Pencil – Palais Royal

I’ve been hanging out at The Makeup Show Los Angeles, which is a pro-only beauty show, and I have so many pictures and lots of information to share with you all. I’m going to start with one of the most exciting things – swatches of all of NARS’s Satin Lip Pencils, which are new for Spring 2013 – I believe they launch in the U.S. on March 7th, and worldwide on April 1st, though they are available for purchase at The Makeup Show (& I did buy one, which I will review once I have the chance to test it out – review is here).

Note: As of 3/6, these are now available for purchase on Nordstrom.com!

They’re packaged just like NARS’s Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss pencils – a jumbo pencil that you sharpen – and they come in 13 shades; 12 will be sold at all the usual places, and one shade, Jardin Des Plantes, is exclusive to the freestanding NARS boutiques.

The following photos were taken with flash; you can see how glossy the pencils are! Note that the darker colors all left a persistent stain on my arm, and the lighter colors (the nudes) did not leave stains.  I’m guessing that these are going to be quite long-wearing, but I’ll get back to you on that.

Please note that the shade names Lodhi & Luxembourg were switched for the first hour or so this post was up; I apologize for the mistake! I am reasonably sure the rest are correct (I double checked my notes) – but if you think there’s something wrong, please let me know!

And finally, Jardin Des Plantes – this one (again), is the boutique exclusive. I believe that boutique exclusives are generally available on narscosmetics.com, but not at other retailers.

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream Review & Swatches

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream

I love a good liquid lipstick, so I’m very happy that several have been launched over the past year or so , both high-end and drugstore.  Offhand, I can think of five – these NYX Xtreme Lip Creams are from early 2012, Wet n Wild recently released its Megalast Liquid Lip Colors (review), Shiseido’s Laquer Rouge was launched late last summer (review), Armani’s Lip Maestro – which I will eventually try! – is from last November, and Guerlain’s Rouge G L’Extrait, which looks lovely but so pricey, is from last summer.  The UK also has Rimmel Apocalips liquid lipstick, which I hope makes it to the US soon.

Packaging-wise, there isn’t much to say about the Xtreme Lip Creams – they’re in a standard tube with a doe foot applicator. I found the applicator easy to use, and was able to apply the lipsticks with it, though a lip brush does lead to a more precise application.

I initially purchased two shades, but I liked them so much I went back for three more, so I currently have five shades, out of the eleven in the range.

NYX Xtreme Lip Cream Swatches

Nude Peach Fuzz // Buttery Nude // Bonfire // Spicy // Absolute Red

As you can see, the Xtreme Lip Creams are quite pigmented.  I love the the pigmentation and the texture, because I am able to achieve full coverage with a very thin layer.  I find thin layers of lip product to be the most comfortable to wear, plus a thin layer is least likely to migrate outside the lip line and more transfer-resistant (though these do not really dry down, and thus they do transfer).

It’s also worth talking about my least favorite thing about the liquid lipsticks — the scent.  It’s sort of plastic-y and unpleasant, though it does fade quickly. It’s not enough to keep me from really enjoying the product, but if you’re more sensitive to smells than I am, it may really bother you.

In the lip swatches, you can see that the palest color (Nude Peach Fuzz) settles into lip lines a little bit and doesn’t look great – however, the four darker colors don’t have this problem at all, and look smooth and even on the lips.

Another nice thing about liquid lipsticks is that they’re easy to mix to create new shades – just dab a little bit of product on the back of your hand, mix, and apply with a lip brush!

Do these Xtreme Lip Creams look like something you’d be interested in?

Black Radiance Perfect Tone Lipstick Review & Swatches

Black Radiance Lipstick - Sahara Red, Brandywine, Midnight Glow

Black Radiance Perfect Tone Lipsticks are one of the drugstore’s true hidden gems.  Black Radiance is made by Markwins, the same company that makes Wet n Wild, and is priced similar to Wet n Wild – these lipsticks are $1.99 each, which is an absolute steal – if you dressed these lipsticks up in better packaging, you could easily sell them for $30 a piece.

And, let’s take a minute to talk about my least favorite part of the lipsticks – the packaging. It is pretty much what you’d expect for a two dollar drugstore lipstick, but it does leave much to be desired. The lipsticks don’t fully retract into the bullet, so it’s easy to nick them.  The shade name is not on the bottom of the tube — it’s only on the shrinkwrap, and only the number is on the bottom of the tube. On the positive side, at least the lipsticks are shrinkwrapped, which I think is ideal for drugstore products; it’s not as wasteful as having cardboard packaging, but it lets you know if someone has opened the lipstick (nothing prevents determined people from opening drugstore products, so my main goal is just to be able to determine if something has been opened or not).

black radiance lipstick -5005 5010 5033

I only own three Black Radiance lipsticks so far, but I will definitely be buying more! The three shades I own are 5005 Sahara Red, 5010 Brandywine, and 5033 Midnight Glow.   All three are very pigmented and creamy, with full coverage in a single swipe.  The swatches below are one swipe only.

And lip swatches:

Sahara Red

Sahara Red is a brick red.

Brandywine

Brandywine is a gorgeous deep berry.

Midnight Glow

Midnight Glow is another deep berry; it’s slightly more purple than Brandywine.

My lips were in pretty bad shape when I took these photographs and the lipsticks smoothed out my lip lines significantly.  My lips still don’t look perfect, but the lipsticks made them look better, rather than emphasizing the dry spots.

These lipsticks also work very well blotted down and worn as stain – I wear Brandywine like this frequently.  They’re quite long lasting, either full strength or blotted down, and not drying at all – perhaps even slightly moisturizing. There’s really nothing I don’t love about the formula!

Do note that Black Radiance can be hard to find in some areas (in Los Angeles, some, but not all, Rite Aid and CVS stores carry it), but it is available online at Drugstore.com.  The brand’s own website has a store locator, but do call ahead – the locator is not accurate for the stores in my area.

Overall, I love these lipsticks, and I think you should check them out. They’re comfortable to wear, longwearing, very pigmented, and come in a great range of colors.  I’m planning to buy several more, and I’ll post swatches when I do!

Milani Lipstick Comparison: New Formula vs. Old Formula

milani black cherry comparison

Old version // new version

Milani recently discontinued their entire line of lipsticks and released a new lineup.  Some of the shades are gone, but some have been rereleased in the new formula.  I previously reviewed the shade Black Cherry, and although I loved the color, I found the formula unwearable – it clung to every dry spot on my lips.  So, I purchased the new Black Cherry to see if the formula was better!

milani black cherry comparison

Old version // new version

As you can see, the packaging has changed from a matte gold to a shiny gold.  I prefer the older packaging, but it’s certainly not a dealbreaker.  The shape of the lipstick bullet has also changed – the discontinued version has a sort of uniquely shaped bullet (you can see it in the first photo), and the new version has a standard bullet.  The scent has also changed – the old version seems to be unscented, and just has that normal lipstick-y smell, while the new version has a strong fruity smell.

Old version // new version

Here are skin swatches of both the old / discontinued and the new version.  The color is almost the same, but the old version appears slightly deeper.

milani black cherry comparison swatch - discontinued version

Discontinued Version

Here’s the discontinued version.  As you can see, it clings to the dry patches in my lips in an unattractive way.  If I exfoliate my lips and use a lip primer, it does better, but it’s still not perfect and is just very difficult to wear.

New version

And here is the new version of Black Cherry – the formula is a huge improvement! It is much, much more even.   On the lips, the color is just about identical between the old and the new versions – the main difference is the improvement in the formula.

Overall, I am really happy with the reformulation of the Milani lipsticks – or at least this one shade that I have tried.  I do prefer the older packaging and I’m not thrilled with the new scent, but it’s completely worth it when you consider that the old version wasn’t really wearable and the new version is gorgeous! Both formulas – old and new – are currently available online at Cherryculture, which ships internationally. Other online retailers only have the old version at the time of this post.

Have you seen the new Milani lipsticks in your area yet, and have you tried them?
